Liz’s Story: “Postnatal Yoga gave me back my sense of self”

Profile:

Age: 35

Birth: First baby, emergency c-section after 51 hours in labour

Issues:

  • Post operative recovery
  • Felt disconnected from my body
  • Backache
  • Weight gain around the stomach, thighs and back

Did postnatal yoga for:

  • Getting back in shape
  • Felt I needed to start doing something physical in a supervised environment, as I had lost faith in my body’s ability to handle even small physical demands
  • Me time!
  • Strengthening of core and pelvic floor

At the end of the course:

  • Felt mentally more in control and able to face the demands of motherhood and other challenging situations
  • Whilst the course is not strenuous in any way, I felt my pelvic floor and core were better toned
  • I felt able to think better, and adjust to motherhood positively, rather than just blagging my way through everyday
  • The course encouraged reflection and mental relaxation, enabling me to face the world in a positive way

I would recommend post natal yoga because:

Spending just a couple of hours a week thinking about yourself is amazingly liberating after having a baby. Nothing quite prepares you for how mentally and physically draining it can be to have a tiny dependent human being relying on you 24/7. From being in charge of your own time and body, you are suddenly the provider of sustenance, warmth and entertainment every second of the day. After major surgery or even a straightforward labor, postnatal yoga gives you time to start focusing on getting your body into ‘repair’ mode, making you feel stronger and more able to face the world. It gives you back your sense of self. A small investment in yourself is a big investment in your future.
